I thought my latest song, Dick Meets Jane, would be good for Valentine’s Day. Lyrics are at the end of the post.
I have to admit, I hated Valentine’s Day and the “Dick and Jane” books when I was a kid. Valentine’s Day was humiliating, and the “Dick and Jane” books represented a culture that was polar opposite of mine. Something I read triggered the lyrics for the song quite a while ago. With Valentine’s Day approaching, I decided to put them to music.

Can you find the pTerodactyl?

Kissy cranes

Déjà vu all over again!

It looks like the pTer is missing some feathers on his wing. Or perhaps he was given the “Black Spot” by the other pTerodactyls à la “Treasure Island.”

Dick Meets Jane
By Timothy Price
[Verse 1]
I was reading on the trolley when I looked up to see
A Goddess of a woman standing right next to me
I stood and kindly offered her my seat
She blushed as she sat, and I tried not to stare
Inviting were her amber eyes, and her smile was so sweet
Was it our destiny that we should meet?
[Chorus]
Oh Lord, must you do this to me?
You temp me with this lovely Lass
Don’t you know that I am just way too plain
Am I another player in her game?
[Verse 2]
We got off at the same stop “Thanks for giving me your seat
My name is Jane. Who are you? May I ask?”
“So nice to meet you, Jane. Funny, you should ask.
My name is Richard, but people call me Dick!”
“Dick and Jane!” We both laughed “Are we like the storybook?”
We joined hands and skipped along
She sang an unfamiliar song
[Chorus]
Oh Lord, must you do this to me?
You temp me with this lovely Lass
She’s a beauty and so divine
Is this an act? Will she be mine?
[Bridge]
We ducked into a Starbucks
Espressos straight-up and black
“May I have your number, Dick?”
“I’m free can you take me out?”
YES! “Yes! You’re a dream come true.”
[Outro]
We dated, and we courted. We fell in love, I proposed
As Dick and Jane, we got married. Two together apropos
We are like a storybook. Lives perfectly aligned
Together, we live in bliss, Happily and so divine
[Chorus]
Oh Lord, I’m happy you did this to me
Tempted with this lovely Lass
Now that all my prayers are answered
We are living our dream at last
❤Am I another player in her game?❤
This was such a hilarious and revealing moment. I had my reservations and then boom 💥 he asked the question and reset everything….at the speed date.
Happy Valentines Day Photographer. Beautiful lyrical love story. I’m so happy that Dick and Jane – the two of you – are blissfully happy.
My first books were the “Janet and John” series and the contexts with images were far removed from daily life. Still we ran up the hills and scamped around with our puppies too.
Kissy Kranes – suits the hours
Happy Valentine’s day 🎉 🌹 💕
Thanks, abvr. A bit of flash fiction in a song. From trolley to Starbucks to living happily ever after. I thought it apropos for Valentine’s Day. The Kissy Cranes knew what I needed for the post.
Lovely lyrics, fitting for these sweet Valentine’s fairytales.
And sweetly romantic for the real love of your life…
Insync with the Kissy Kranes.
We need to keep fairytales alive.
I agree, especially the good ones
Hi Timothy, I enjoyed your song, it is like a ballad. I also remember Dick and Jane 😊. Your pictures are stunning. I love the beaver.
Thanks, Robbie.
A fun twist, turning two things you weren’t fond of into a charming story with a happy ending. Beautiful photos!
Thanks, Michele.
I love the song, Timothy ~ a perfect song for today 🙂 I share your feelings about Valentine’s Day, and these days, even more so because it leaves me wondering where the first six weeks of the year went. But you’ve made this V-day a good one; I enjoyed your guitar riffs and fun lyrics. It all comes together well with your Tangle Heart Tree and crescent moon. It’s perfect!
Thanks, Randall. I appreciate it. I agree on how the time goes by.
BTW I saw you comment on rabirius about Led Zeppelin’s “The Rain Song.” I was so taken by that song when I first heard it. It’s an amazing song.
There were two songs that impacted me as a kid, songs different than what I was used to listening to, Zeppelin, and then, for me, the gold standard at the time: Sultans of Swing…
Sultans of Swing is amazing. “Tales of Brave Ulysses” by Cream had an impact on me when I was around 12 years old. All of Cream’s was was really cool. I loved Alice Cooper’s “Welcome To My Nightmare” when it came out in the mid 70s. I got into Alice Cooper when I was around 13 or 14. I bought his Killer album because it had Boa Constrictor on the cover. I had boa constrictors and figured it had to be a cool album, and it was.
I will listen to “Tales of Brave Ulysses” today – and agree with Cream’s coolness 🙂 I remember it took me 6-9 months to save money to buy my first cassette tape ever, the Dire Straits album. What a great memory! And I still have it, along with many others.
I cleaned a lot of horse stalls an dog crap to save money for albums before I got my first real job when I was 15. Music was so expensive back then.
I was just thinking about this ~ buying an album was a bigtime event back in the day, and a lot of thought went into how to spend hard-earned money. These days, with a couple of clicks, I hear all different types of music.
Also, when a new album was released, like “Houses of the Holy”, for example, the whole world shared in the release of the album, and in everyone experienced the wonder of the music at the same time. There was anticipation and most everyone knew about the album whether or not they listened to music, if they liked the group or not.
Now days, it’s seems to be all niche. Even huge stars like Taylor swift is niche to me. I have probably heard a Taylor swift song at one time or another, but I cannot name one of her songs and I have no idea when her last album came out. On the other hand, our editor at the office knows everything about Taylor Swift.
Since I’m so far outside of the popular media culture, I may be totally wrong about the world experiencing big stars’ releases of albums these days, but I know it’s much different than it was in per-internet days.
I bought Alice Cooper’s latest album, “Road” the day it was released in September or October. The only reason I knew Alice Cooper had a new album coming out is I get notifications from his website. I’m and old fan. Although I was pleasantly surprised how many young people and couples with young children made up and dressed like Alice were at his concert I went to last October.
It is great to hear that young fans are enjoying Alice Cooper – I remembered reading about his intelligence and character way back when, and that made me even more of a fan.
It is funny you mention how niche music and the hype/mystery of releases have changed. I was sitting down with my nieces and nephews and their friends, talking about country music (they know the artists and songs and were giving me an idea of who I should listen to as I wanted to learn and listen to what they’re listening to). There is a Taylor Swift country song that is quite good, and I told them I had listened to her new album (Midnight) – and they are fans of Taylor but had no clue about the new album… I was stunned and told them I’m probably wrong because I know nothing about today’s modern pop/hiphop/etc… My days are cemented in the grunge, indie rock, classic rock phase.
Things are just so different today. When I was a teenager, I heard the song “Black Coffee in Bed” (I was an early cable pirate of MTV when it first came out), and this song hit a note, but no one on the West Coast knew anything about the band or song. But a record store agreed to track down and order a cassette for me… and the month-long anticipation waiting for that cassette was really pretty cool. These days, I hear of a new release (The National, who I enjoy) I click and it is streaming within minutes. It takes away some of the joy/anticipation for me – although it sure is convenient. It’s great to be able to reflect on the “good old days” with you 😎
One good thing about today’s instant access is that you can find any style you want and new music relatively easily.
This is so perfect Timothy. I love your song 🎶, love your lyrics. I agree that Valentine’s Day was humiliating for. a kid in school. The photos are beautiful? The Tangle Heart a beautiful sight.
Happy Valentine’s Day Timothy. 💝
Thanks, Holly. I’m happy you liked it. I was always the weirdo in elementary school, and VD just made my weirdness stand out more.
I didn’t like VD either. I don’t like the idea of handing out cards in class. I think that’s a thing of the past now. Have a wonderful day.
Briliant song . And the happies day to you. Lovely photos of smoothing cranes too. All love for the happiness you give.
Nice song. Happy Valentine’s Day, Timothy!
Thanks, Heidi.
I love the song…put a smile on my face:)
Happy to make you smile. Thanks, Janet.
Great photos Tim and fun lyrics though I’m not a huge advocate of Valentines Day. Have a good one regardless ❤️
Me neither, but it is, so I decided to make the best of it.
Fabulous song, Timothy! True love in real 🙂 Wonderful photos as well. May your Valentine’s Day be sweet 💞
Thanks, Dale. I hope you are having a great VD.
Well… I am at work, however… soo far so good 😉
That is a great Valentine’s Day song, Tim, and I am glad it happy ending. I remember the Dick and Jane, Spot and Puff books. Remember Zeke the handyman/gardener that came through now and then? I always wondered what his backstory was.
Wishing you and Laurie a wonderful Valentine’s Day!
Thanks, Lavinia. I’m happy you liked it.
Thanks for sharing your fun love song and beautiful photos. Happy Valentine’s Tim!
Thanks, Brad.
You really did make the best of VD, Tim! In every way!
Love the song and your day in pictures!
Happy Valentines!
Thanks, Marina. I’m happy you liked the song. I hope you have had a great VD.
As any other day! 😉
I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting the happy ending, but I’m happy that Dick and Jane finally found true love! Happy Valentine’s Day to you and all of yours! ❤
Thanks, Tiffany. Happy endings happen from time to time.
Really enjoyed your song, Tim. I no longer celebrate Valentine’s Day due to the bloody history attached to St. Valentine and for other reasons. My mouth flew open when I saw your crescent moon. Wow! And the cranes kissing had me laughing. What a cool post! Thank you! ❤️ PS I do believe in love. Just not the kind this day portrays.
Thanks, AmyRose. I’ve never really celebrated it, and as I mentioned, I hated it when I was a kid. But celebrating love on Valentine’s Day goes back many centuries before 1929.
Such a charming song! Happy Valentine’s Day!
Thanks, Dawn.
Dick and Jane readers, the best way to learn how to read. I teach reading.
Amber eyes? There are only two colors of amber, yellow and red.
It must have been the Valentine cards … Don was my fave, but my friend too. Sadly, we parted ways when my dad was transferred. Our song, “Put Your Head On My Shoulder” by Paul Anka.
About 5% of the population has amber eyes, which is mostly caused by more pheomelanin, a reddish-yellow pigment, in the eyes. Amber eyes are slightly more yellow than hazel eyes.
Happy Valentine’s dear Tim!
Love the song! 💘💘💘
You to. Thanks, Resa.
💘💘
too, that is.
I, too, hated Dick and Jane. “Look, Dick look! See Spot run is not a story”!! Your song portrays the Dick and Jane storybook world view perfectly.
D&J boos were ridiculous. Laurie calls it “The Dick Song” because she hates D&J so much she cant even listen to a song where they are mentioned. Thanks, Liz.
You’re welcome, Tim.
゚・:*:・。(〃・ω・)ノ Happy Valentine’s Dayヽ(・ω・〃)。・:*:・゚
Thanks, Cindy.
Happy Valentine’s Day! I love your Dick (and Jane) song. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time for kissing cranes, tangled heart tree photos, and dick songs. I’m totally not biased or anything on that last one.
I realized when I started to write “Happy VD!” at one point that if one’s old enough one might be confused which VD I was referring to. And I’m pretty sure some people get VD on VD. A Dick song for VD seemed like the right thing to post. Thanks, JYP.
Happy VD to you too!!! Happy VD is better than unhappy VD, right? I agree. I was totally expecting the spam filter to not read past “I love your Dick” and throw me in spam jail again.
Absolutely. You were given clemency on VD. When I picked up our heart-shaped pizza, there was a young couple in front of me putting in an order. The young woman was all cute an coy, the young man seemed clueless and awkward. I wondered how their post pizza profundity was going to unfold.
Oh, here it is! I almost missed it, expecting the post for the 14th. I’m so glad you decided to go ahead and share the song, Tim. I think it’s wonderful. I hope you and Laurie had a lovely Valentine’s Day. Hugs to you both.
Thanks, Teagan.
Awesome photos and awesome song you came up with!!! Love the lyrics, the Starbucks shoutout, the “Dick and Jane” theme and it’s all very fitting for Valentine’s Day! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks, Samantha. I’m happy you liked it.
I missed the Dick and Jane book era thankfully … although I did have the spinnoff Spot books so I could “See Spot, see Spot run”. That lasted a week and then I was back on comic books ha. Love the kissy Cranes!
Lucky you only had to read “See Spot run.” I loved Mad’s Spy Vs Spy when I was a kid. They were easy reading. Thanks, Brian.
YES! I love Spy vs Spy .. and doing the tri-fold on the back page.
Hey Tim … a groovy tune with a happy ending! Wonderful pics!
Thanks, Julie. I’m happy you liked it. Needed a happy ending for VD.
