  1. Wolf. There are a lot of very large antennas on top of the “Crest” as we call it. Here’s a page that has a photo of the towers and other info: http://www.takemytrip.com/06newmex/06_19a.htm

Several years ago we took a friend visiting from Spain to the Crest. We drove up, parked next to the towers, and did all the tourist stuff in the snow and cold. When we got back in the van to leave, I turned the key and nothing happened. The lights were bright, so the battery was good, but nothing. Being on a mountain, it didn’t take much to get the van rolling down the road; however, having an automatic transmission, we couldn’t simply push or roll start it, but once we got well below the towers it started up like normal. Apparently the microwaves from the towers were causing a mini EMP that disabled the electronics for the ignition system in the van.

There is also a tramway that runs from the base of the mountains to the crest. You can read about it here: http://sandiapeak.com/index.php?page=history-technology

  2. Thanks for the link and the story. I had to smile abt the car that didnt start. Seems a fine place to visit when on holiday. I remember the Mont Ventoux, famous for its tour de France passage, had similar antennas on top.
