Jaywalking

The lyrics for my latest song came to me while I was jaywalking across Jefferson Blvd. by the office. The style of the song came to me while I was changing the light fixtures from fluorescent to LED in the men’s restroom at the office. When I removed one of the fluorescent bulbs from one of the fixtures, the end of the bulb burst into flames. It was really bizarre. Both sockets the bulb’s pins were in melted in the few seconds it took me to twist the bulb out of the sockets while it burst into flames. The flames went out before I could get my phone out of my pocket and do a photo or video. I was standing on a ladder with a burning bulb in my hand, so I wasn’t in a good position to get to my phone. Mark came into the restroom a few seconds later to tell me he had come in to get stuff together to go out to the field tomorrow. I showed him the melted sockets and burned bulb, we talked about his fieldwork, and I forgot to photograph the melted sockets and burned bulb. Anyway, the burning bulb reminded me of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire”, which gave me the idea to very loosely write the song in a similar style.

The Jazz Age

Resa posted The Jazz Age on her Art Gowns blog. It’s a fantastic post well worth a visit.

The crows are inspiration for the song, also. There are thousands of crows in flight to nowhere.

Jaywalking
By Timothy Price

Jaywalking
Code talking
Walking round in women’s stockings

Jabberwocky
So shocking
Minor keys we’re really rocking

Shaking booties
Tutti fruity
long-legged exotic beauties

Masked cuties
Black hoodies
We’re all getting COVID cooties

We’re all on our way to nowhere
We once thought we’d go somewhere
We’re on our way to nowhere
But now we’re neither here nor there

We’re all on our way to nowhere
Downtrodden, fallen from grace
We’re on our way to nowhere
Still stuck in the same old place

Pipe dreams
Lost steam
Hogtied, so it seems

Inbred
In the red
Can’t seem to get ahead

Lost time
sublime
No, you’re not on my dime

Not fine
Green slime
Flat tire? It doesn’t rhyme

We’re all on our way to nowhere
We once thought we’d go somewhere
We’re on our way to nowhere
But now we’re neither here nor there

We’re all on our way to nowhere
Downtrodden, fallen from grace
We’re on our way to nowhere
Still stuck in the same old place

YouTubing
KY lubing
Don’t you know we’re really grooving

Zoom bombing
Face palming
We’re out of sync. Why you calling?

Youth aging
Folks gaging
While the culture wars are waging

Been raped
No probate
It seems like there’s no escape

We’re all on our way to nowhere
We once thought we’d go somewhere
We’re on our way to nowhere
But now we’re neither here nor there

We’re all on our way to nowhere
Downtrodden, fallen from grace
We’re on our way to nowhere
Still stuck in the same old place

  1. Smooth vocals, Tim!
You make nowhere seem like nowhere. Actually… it seems like somewhere.
    LOL!
Thank you for the shout out! It’s much appreciated.
I’m already working on the next episode.
    Oddly enough….it’s nowhere….?

    • I guess I’ve been feeling like a “Nowhere Man” changing lights in the “can”. I can hardly wait until you next episode. Thanks, Resa.

        • You are the master seamstress (the mistress seamstress doesn’t sound quite right). You are definitely going somewhere with you drawings and gowns.

          • I hope so, Tim!
I want the Art Gowns to do some good. I’m still seeking a buzz line. Kind of a “Rags to Riches” (overdone) thing..Trash to Treasure..
I dreamed of one last night, but forgot it when I woke up.
Everyone who ever wears a gown should want to be in one of my kind to the planet gowns.

        • Hmmm. WP shows I’m still following you, but I was noticing I hadn’t seen any posts from you. WP has it;s issues. Thanks, Cheyenne.

  2. Tim, this is the most notable one of your crane/crow photos ever. When the results of the 2021 local Christmas Bird Count were released, the number of crows counted in the Albuquerque were over 4400, outnumbering pigeons by almost 1200. I believe that this huge flock’s rookery is just upriver from you on the east side of the river just northeast of the Romero Road access. I took some photos last month of the rookery there. There may be more trees behind the ones that can be seen at the river’s edge. I was there in the mid-afternoon when a lot were headed home and roosting there.

  3. WOW. Love the song. Lyrics are brill. And I can see why it came to you when it did in a way, cos I can imagine that bulb getting changed. THEN you have Resa’s fabulous post AND a photo. Blog treat today

    • Thanks, Shey. I’m happy you liked the song. The bulb was surprising because I did realize they could burn like that. Some of the fixtures I have to change out “hot” so far I haven’t shocked myself. Resa’s the best and she got your latest novel in her post.

  4. Yowza! How can you so calmly mention the light burst into flame in your hand. Sheesh.
I often feel like I’m on my way to nowhere.
Talk about a sky littered with crows! Impressive!

    • That nowhere felling is easy to get these days. I couldn’t react too much being up on a ladder. I didn’t want to break the bulb because they are such a pain to clean up. Thanks, Dale.

  5. Melted sockets and burning bulbs sounds dangerous! But it seems it was a lightbulb moment cause that song is brilliant and ah- the crows shot!!!!! I may be a little late in the day but you sure made my day! 😉 [we’re under snow siege!]

  6. Good thing you don’t live in COS. The PD would have found a way to ticket you for the jaywalking. 😉

    • Word has it our cops are giving tickets because it’s not worth the hassle of being sued. Changes in the law have made it so cops can be sued for almost anything and the cities/counties/state are not providing coverage for them. It’s a really sorry situation for law enforcement. Thanks, David.

  7. 🤣 only you would be looking to take a shot while your hands were burning Timothy.
Sorry you missed the shot but you more than made up for it with this incredible song you downloaded direct from the inspiration of Billy Joel! Nice Job.. loved it~ 👏👏👏
