Springing Forward, It’s So Backward

Lyrics and Music by Timothy Price

Springing Forward is my 2024 Daylight Savings Time (DST) protest song (lyrics are below). The song is hyper, so don’t be surprised if you find it annoying, like changing to DST and losing an hour of sleep.

I’m particularly leery of losing an hour of sleep tonight since I’ve been having a lot of trouble with pain over the last several months and don’t always sleep very well. Side note: Laurie has more trouble sleeping than I do. Since last summer, I’ve been trying to get a handle on the pain. I started riding a mountain bike, changed to an anti-inflammatory diet, and lost over 35 pounds. You would think that would help a lot. But not really. I am still having a lot of joint and muscle pain, especially at night. If you noticed, I don’t write as much, don’t comment as much, and mostly write short comments; it’s because of the pain. I have enough trouble typing with numb fingertips, but with all the pain, my typing has gone to hell.

I reached out to my new GP last month and asked her what specialist I needed to see to try and get the pain under control. She had me go in and see her. She put me on Gabapentin at night and gave me some more dietary suggestions. I have a follow-up with her next week. My pain has been down to manageable background pain most of the time during the day for the past few weeks, but I still have issues with pain increasing at night, waking me up and keeping me awake. But it’s much better than it was a few weeks ago.

While it’s a real challenge to play guitar with numb fingertips, it is more of a challenge to play when my fingers are swollen, painful, and don’t want to move. But I play every day, whatever the condition of my hands are and how much I’m hurting elsewhere. My hands have not been as swollen over the past couple of weeks, so I was able to do halfway decent sloppy shredding on my guitar solos I recorded this morning for Springing Forward, above.

Red sky in the morning is an ominous warning about changing to DST and losing an hour of sleep!

Springing Forward, It’s So backward
By Timothy Price

(4x)
Springing forward
It’s so backward

We lose an hour to save some time
Springing forward
It’s so backward

Body clocks are broken; we’re running behind
Springing forward
It’s so backward

Moving like zombies, we’re losing our minds
Springing forward
It’s so backward

We saved an hour by losing time
Springing forward
It’s so backward

It’s time for DST
Lockstep to New Destiny
If you thought you were free
Don’t change your clock! You will see!

You Fools don’t complain
But an hour is really insane
The clocks are sacred, can’t you see?
We’re not free to mess around

Springing forward. Leave time be
It’s so backward. Can’t we see
Springing forward. We’re not free
To play like gods. You see?

(4x)
Springing forward
It’s so backward

It’s time again for DST
Lockstep to New Destiny
If you thought you were free
Don’t change your clock! And you will see!

  1. I am so sorry you are suffering so, Tim. I hope an even better solution shows up sooner than later to reduce the pain.
I am with you 100% on this STOOPID DST. I don’t know why they don’t just chuck the effing thing.

  2. Oh no. Sorry about your painful fingers. You should ask your GP about finger braces. They won’t help much about the pain but it should help with mobility. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis and ehlers Danlos syndrome use them to help their fingers with the swelling, movement in their fingers.
I love the colours of the sky. So beautiful.
I don’t have to deal with DST. Except when my shows, or my tech isn’t syncing properly 🤣🤦‍♀️

  3. I told you probably before, I hate hate hate DST… I still don’t understand why they keep hanging on this idiote rule. But if it’s makes people creative to write interesting catchy and ‘annoying’ songs, well, maybe it’s not that bad… 😉
So sorry to read about your physical discomfort and pain. Hope you can find a solution to relieve the pain…

    • Thanks, Herman. Old out of date laws and practices are hard to do away with. They should have sunset laws on most laws.

  4. Oh, no, Tim! You do realize how much of a hero you are, going through all this and doing so many things so well too …honestly that guitar.. you could’ve fooled me! You’re killing it! And DST on top! I won’t elaborate as you already know my views. Try to rest and may the pain disappear very very soon! Hera sends threatening woofs to scare your pain off!

  5. AW, Tim, I am so sorry to read of all your problems. There is noithing worse than getting up after a night like this. But you are a hero, truly cos despite that there you are bravely out there, living life and also inspiring us all with your wonderful pics, songs and music, with your kindess always. All love.

  6. I am not a fan of the clock changes either, Tim. Losing sleep is not a great thing for me either. Chronic pain is a difficult condition to live with, and I am having some of that right now, too. I am glad to hear you are finding some options. Thank you for being here, and sharing all these beautiful images, songs, and general kindness. You are an inspiration!

    • Thanks, Lavinia. I’m sorry to hear you’re having pain issues, also. It gets really tiresome.

        • I have a lot of pain in both of my shoulders, but the right shoulder has much less pain because that’s the shoulder the cats lie on and purr. I’ve been trying to get the kitties to purr on my left shoulder, with little success.

  7. It makes me sad to hear you are suffering. Night pain is awful!
Your lyrics are pretty cool. I live in AZ so we don’t touch our clocks. But I hate the 3 hour difference now with my friends and family back East.
You were great on the guitar.
Hope you get this all figured out.
Are you on a Statin? Statins cause so much muscle aches and pain.

    • We used to change the last weekend of April and the last weekend of October, DST has been extended both directions, so why not leave it be Sam I Am? Thanks, Couriers.

  8. Dangit! I’ve been eagerly watching to see if you were able to finish this song — and I still managed to miss it. Sorry to be late.
Great job all around with the song, Tim. LOVE the guitar solos. “Hyper”? I guess so… but it captures all the angst I feel about the time changes. My own back pain cheered yours along, because it echoed my feelings about that too.

I’m very happy to read that the new med has helped some. I imagine that it’s a good thing (for your hands) to play the guitar at least some every day. At least, when I was in physical therapy after breaking my wrist (which effected my shoulder and hand as well — my hand more than anything) the PT said playing my piano would be helpful. Big hugs, my friend.

  9. Yes.. I hate the clock change.
I should be adjusted by November 3, 2024.

Pain sucks. Tim, things considered, you seem to be giving it a run for its money.

The song works for me, not annoying and I love the guitar! xx

  10. A robust recording, with fine guitar + drums, one of the best you’ve done imho.
Sorry to read about the finger problem. But also surprised, having heard the song first. The problem doesn’t show at all, if you ask me, which means double credit to the player!

    • Thanks, Socratis. I’m happy you enjoyed it. The swelling was down so I could play better.

  11. Sorry to read about the pain you are dealing with. I commend you for making changes and playing every day despite the challenges. That is admirable. And of course, sharing photos and engaging as you do. 🙏🏻

  12. Damn, this song is going to be my song of the season 🙂 This BS of springing forward & falling backward is one of the minor issues that create so much anger/frustration with me… it’s idiotic. And hence, this song is PERFECT. Good on you for losing 35 lbs; I imagine it’ll help reduce some inflammation in the long run… and it also leads to another one of my small issues of anger: aging. It sucks 🙃. Cheers to a great spring ahead, Tim ~ take care!

  13. So sorry to hear about the pain situation. Best wishes they are able to help you get that under control. No where near the issues you are dealing with, but my 31 years in the IT business typing pretty much nonstop has really damaged some of my hand joints. Right now just an inconvenience, but worried what the future will bring. I do OD on Turmeric to help my swollen joints after races and that has definitely helped, but that is only a short term, eat through the excessive swelling from all the impact. I definitely hate the spring forward DST and there were talks about getting rid of it in IL – honestly, this state has bigger issues to worry about.

    • I’ve added all kinds of supplements. Pain is up and down so it’s hard to say what’s working. The inflammation has generally been down. Thanks, Brian.
