WARNING! Psychodilic features a Psycho Kitty, a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, a Black Mamba, and colorful psychedelic patterns and holes that move in a regular, irregular fashion. The lyrics are nonsensical, as well. If you have tendencies toward Ailurophobia Psychopathesis (Fear of Psychopathic Cats), Ophidiophobia (Fear of Snakes), Trypophobia (Fear of clustered patterns of irregular holes), or Emetophobia (fear of vomiting), you might want to take a pass on viewing the above music video, and simply enjoy the photo of the sunset below.

Psycho kitty drives me crazy
Psycho colors are so hazy
Psychopathic’s normal say
How can we live this way
Psycho kitty drives me crazy
Psycho-spastic, I’m not lazy
Psychopathy’s here to stay
How can we live this way
Shaking like a rattlesnake
I don’t even hesitate
Feeling how it resonates
I bite the viper’s tongue
Shaking like a rattlesnake
You know I hallucinate
How it makes me salivate
I bite the viper’s tongue

Tristan walked out to her car to go to work and discovered a large Diamond Back Rattlesnake beside her car. She when back inside, got her snake stick, and a 5-gallon bucket with a lid, put the snake in the bucket, put the lid on the buck, carried the buck with the snake in it out to the Petroglyph Park, and let the snake go. She said the snake was very calm the whole time.

A dazed Lesser Goldfinch sitting on Tristan’s thumb.

Clear and hot today. 103ºF (39.4ºC), not a cloud in the sky.

Peter, Paul, and Mary together at dusk.

Like typical teenagers, PP&M are easily distracted. It took a lot of effort to get all three to look at the camera.

Paul seems to be acting like he’s feeding Mary while Peter looks at other things.

All three in a tangle of branches. Paul moved down to a lower branch, and Peter flew over to the other side of the Tangle Heart Tree.

Daddy Owl showed up with a snake, perched on a branch below Peter, and started doing his “I’m back from Wowlmart, honey!” hoot for Mama Owl to come and take the snake. While he was waiting for form Mama, he was messing with the snake that started out wrapped around Daddy Owl’s leg.

Mama Owl landed on the Tangle Heart Tree with something in her beak. Daddy Owl flew over to the Tangle Heart Tree and land with the snake dangling from his beak. Before Mama Owl could hop up to where Daddy Owl was and make the exchange, Peter flew over to Daddy Owl to get the snake.

A lot of flapping of wings and gnashing of beaks took place before Peter secured the snake in his beak.

Mama Owl started up toward Peter, and Daddy flew back to Wowlmart. Mama seemed like she was trying to get Peter to take her morsel, but Peter was saying “But Mama! Can’t you see I have a snake?” Mama finally flew off and left Peter to eat his snake.

Mama flew over to a tree she often perches on by our gate to the ditch and watched the lingering colors fade away.

Sunset colors and the moon in the Tangle Heart Tree last night.

The moon at 84.8%
I got a video of a Coachwhip Snake (Masticophis flagellum testaceous) swimming in the irrigation ditch. I know a lot of people have trouble with snakes, but they are really quite beautiful. It’s not often I see a Coachwhip Snake taking a swim. After we got back from checking on the owls and walking in the bosque this morning, I wrote a song to go with the video, appropriately named Coachwhip Snake. I recorded the song and put it all together in the above video this afternoon. Enjoy!
Coachwhip Snake
Lyrics: Timothy Price
Music: Timothy Price
Verse
Slither swimming in the ditch
Sloppy sine wave between the wake
Slips the bank scales in cross-stitch
Stops and eyes me with suspicion
Bridge
We stand we stare he and me
Paparazzo and snake admiration
Chorus
Masticophis flagellum testaceous
That’s what I said
Beautiful snake, braided scales
Colubrid whipped up in western red
Verse
Slither swimming in the ditch
Sloppy sine wave between the wake
Bridge
We stand we stare he and me
Paparazzo and snake admiration
Chorus
Masticophis flagellum testaceous
That’s what I said
Beautiful snake, braided scales
Colubrid whipped up in western red

If you ever wondered what a happy snake looks like, this is about as good as it gets. Blue was content and happily lounging on her hot spot last night after having two large rats for dinner. I feed her pre-killed rats once a month that I buy frozen, keep in the freezer, and thaw out a couple of days before feeding time. Then I heat the thawed rats in hot water before I feed them to her.
She decided she was really hungry last night after she shed her skin a few days ago. She was striking at anything that moved, mostly me, as I got her from her encloser into her feeding box. When I threw the heated rat in the feeding box, she grabbed it and constricted it like it was live prey. But then instead of just eating it, she had to play with it for a while. This is the only snake I know of that plays with her food. It’s very annoying because I want her to eat her rats so I can put her back in her enclosure.
How does a snake play with a dead rat you may be asking? After she’s constricted it for a while, she will bite it and drag it around the feeding box, push it around the feeding box with her nose, start to eat it, then stop, and check the other end of the rat. Often when I open the feeding box to see how she’s progressing, she will strike at me, and then resume playing with her food.
After she finishes eating her rats, she is satisfied and very easy to handle.

Blue, our red tail boa, is back from her few months at Tristan’s. The woman who thought she was interested in a boa was surprised by how long they live and how big they get, and lost interest in helping Tristan take care of Blue. After issues like the thermostat that controls the heating system in Blue’s cage failing, we decided to bring her back to our house where it’s much easier for me to take care of her.
