Jake’s Big Adventure

While my car was in the shop for maintenance, Jake and I took a 3.8-mile (6.1 Km) walk down, up, and all around the Albuquerque flood diversion channel. I was surprised how much Jake liked running down and up the steep sides of the flood control channels. Whenever we came up to the top of a channel, Jake would hop onto the road and give whatever was in front of us a look of intense interest. It was like a game for Jake.

The route

Jake peed on a high-voltage transmission line pole. He thought it was electrifying.

Serious security: An electric fence behind the cyclone fence and barbed wire.

Needless to say, Jake was worn out after his big adventure.

  1. I know little about New Mexico, but in the pictures it looks very dry. Almost like a desert. So why is a flood diverter needed? I figure the ground would just soak up any rain water.

BTW your pictures are exactly how I picture Australia. But the Mad Max version of Australia.

    • NM is very dry. The problem is, the ground does not soak up water; it deflects water, and the runoff is fierce and can be deadly. Earlier in the year, parts of Albuquerque got 2 inches of rain in a few hours, and the flood control channel was running rim to rim above the 18-foot mark. Downtown Albuquerque was flooded.

A few months ago, six inches of rain fell outside Roswell, NM, and inundated Roswell. It was similar to the flooding in Valencia, Spain. Thanks, DR.

  2. It is an interesting industrial landscape and you made great photos with that certain “lost places”-appeal. I am pretty sure, for a dog it’s as much fun as a natural place. And I like to see his nice fluffiness. 🙂

  3. Great post and beautiful photographs. The view of the desolated place looks so much like I see it in Hollywood movies… or the ‘Breaking Bad’ series!

    • I’m sure they used the flood control channels in Breaking Bad. There are some latge drainage channels in Los Angeles used in many movies. Thanks, Herman.

    • I never saw Breaking Bad, but I can imagine the channels were good places for dirty deeds done cheap. Thanks, Dawn.

  4. Awww! Tim, he wants to go again!

Of course when the car is back, that window seat is very tasty,

Did he pee on any of the graffiti? Grapeeti?

    It’s a dog’s life, and with you, it’s wondeful!

    • No. Fortunately. The channels are fun every once in a while. He likes his nightly walks in the bosque, where he tries to make friends with the coyotes. Thanks, Beth.

  5. Never cross the streams Jake…bad things can happen, very bad things. Looks like you have varying degrees of graffiti artists down there – the masked gypsy lady is pretty good. Some of the others need to stay in art school.

    • The channels can fill to those 18-foot marks in a matter of minutes when we get major downpours. The fire department is always having to rescue people who got caught in the wash. Most of the graffiti around here is gang-related. Finding a well-done piece is few and far between. Thanks, Brian.
