It’s an interesting story for many reasons. One it is only in the Gospel of Mark, the earliest gospel. The fact the the demon gave Jesus his name and the they are many demons is significant because names were important in ancient times, and getting the demon’s name showed Jesus had power over demons. The fact that the man was so crazy and super strong was explained by the confession that the demon’s name was Legion and that he was many demons. It also implies the notion that demons are incorporeal, so one or many can posses any corporeal being.
The interesting thing is Legion begging Jesus not to send them out of the area, but to cast them into the pigs. There is probably a lot of meaning for Jews at the time that we don’t understand, but I can imagine that since pigs are unclean, there was no reason for Jesus not to send the demons into the pigs. And it’s a bit of a miracle Jesus escapes the area without being killed by the pigs’ owners, given he left them in economic ruin for allowing the demons to posses the pigs and the pigs drown themselves.
Okay! Now I get it.
Thing is I like pigs, they are cute and smart. However, I forgot they are a filthy bunch. Makes sense that Jesus sent the demons there.
Also, I had not considered the Jewish POV at the time, which is still their POV to this day.
Most importantly I hadn’t considered the financial ruin for the pig farmers.
You are right, it is a bit of a miracle that Jesus got out of there.
Thanks Tim!!!!!
We are back to a light, steady rain and mid 40s here this morning. The gophers left one patch of purple tulips they could not get at because they are in gravel. Had them for years, sole survivors. They are in bloom now.
I keep flipping back between skulls, pigs, and demons…none of which you really want on top of you, but I am partial to skulls because.. you know.. Halloween ha.
YES! I see them. I think there are 8! xx
At least. Good thing there were no pigs around. Thanks, Resa.
Yes! You’d need a lot of pigs to drown for the 8 demons. Honestly, one of the stories I understand the least.

Yep, the trees are trembling!

Gosh, there really are lots of strange things brewing up there!
Kind of scary. Thanks, Miriam.

That’s nice you have some tulips left. It was 24 when I got up this morning. The peach blossom might not survive. Thanks, Lavinia.
That is a problem with our fruit trees and spring freezes, too.

Demons love Halloween. Thanks, Brian.
No escaping those demons!
They are everywhere. Thanks, Liz.
You’re welcome, Tim.
I see the noses and everything. Nicely done.. love it, Tim❣️
Thanks, Cidny.
A beautiful sky
Thanks, Roberta.
A legion of demons is not small thing…
Indeed, it’s not. Swine beware. Thanks, Dale.
Indeed! (Since I read your exchange with Resa; otherwise, I’d have no clue!)
