    • This hornet is four to five times larger than what we call yellow jackets. This guy is 2″ to 2 1/2″ long and as big around as my thumb. It was big enough that my autofocus locked onto it while it was in flight.

        • It didn’t seem to notice me in the least. Our yellow jackets come to our table on the deck and bite off pieces of our food, and fly off with the pieces of food, but they are only aggressive if you step on their nest (they make their nests in the ground here). Then they are really aggressive, and have nasty stings.
