Once upon a time, when cars had wings, you hopped in the driver’s seat, rolled down your window, spread your wings, and flew down the open road without your hair being whipped into a tangle. You could spit out your window and splat the windshield behind you instead of having it blown back in your face. Those days are gone — or are they?
Woo hoo! Ride on!
With the wind, like the wind and breaking wind! Spinal Tap’s album was “Break Like The Wind!” Thanks, Dale.
Yaya! Love it. And man, they just don’t make cool cars no mo’!
Are you talking about quarter glass? Nobody has built a car with those windows in 30+ years.
.
You’re nostalgic abou…that?
It’s nice since I don’t have air my old truck. Thanks, DR.
Yeah… they are nice. I am jealous. The quarter windows on my Miata are fixed in place, and I really wish they opened (especially when it’s raining) for some air.
Same thing with my Miata MX-5. It rarely rains out here, but it would be nice to open those little wings.
The good old times 🙂
Thanks, Rudi.
Cars were better-looking years ago. They had character, style. My best friend had a Ford Mustang Convertible years ago. The looks… that sound…
Thanks, Herman.
Not with you at the wheel I am sure.
Wheeling along, singing a song without the wind messing up my long hair covering up my red neck. Thanks, Shey.
Abso brilliant.
Go Tim Go!
Thanks, Nancy.
when I drove I loved turning the music up very loud and driving fast….:)
The only way to drive. Thanks, Janet.
I loved those wings! Cars used to be more …human.
True. Thanks, Marina.
I remember car wing windows! Nostalgic sigh . . .
Thanks, Liz.
You’re welcome, Tim.
I remember seeing someone get a windshield full of coffee when one got dumped out a window of the car in front of him. Long time ago now! 🙂
That would be a surprise. Thanks, Lavinia.
What a memory … fun relaxed days, minus the lughie (sp?) in the face.. or was that bird crap.. hahaha
I still turn up the music and sing loud which I love. I don’t want to see no cars with wings this lifetime tho lol 💓
I almost use “loogie”, but figured not many followers would know what I was referring to. I’m happy you remember some awesome old slang. We also used to call it a “floogie!” Thanks, Cindy.
Rolling down the windows, cassette tape in the deck playing! Man, I miss those days! The No A/C days not so much! 🤣🤣
You need A/C way up north? I don’t miss cassette tapes. I have like a million of them stored away in the infinite shed of doom. I haven’t had a cassette tape player in like a hundred years in eTime. Thanks, Becky.
Oh yeah our summer as short as it is can be up to +40C
One year the heat wave was insane. Stores couldn’t keep up with the A/C and fans and it was brutal!
I loved making mixed tapes!
I don’t have any tapes anymore.
But still have all my CDs 🤣🤣
Summer heat has to make up for being short. I used to make mixed tapes. We made play lists before play lists. I retrofit a cassette deck in the faring of one of my motorcycles in the late 70s and I installed speakers in my helmet with a headphone jack to connect the speakers to the cassette deck. I rocked out while riding. It was so cool. I think motorcycle helmets come with speakers in them these days.
This winter has been warmer than last year. Not very good considering how forest fires season started early last year. I’m hoping this summer will be great too! And I can actually enjoy it🤣
Wow that would have been cool listening to cassette while riding on your motorcycle! Wouldn’t have anyone fighting over what song to play🤣 that was the only downside of having cassette decks in cars!
I think helmets have Bluetooth in them.
I noticed I still have an auto-reverse cassette deck in my old truck with the wing vents.
That was always a good feature to have.
Reminded me of a time when my friend flicked his cigarette ash out the window. A couple seconds later, I heard a weird snap-crackle cose to my ear and said, “Please put my hair out.” They were confused, looked at me, yelled, “OMG your hair is on fire!” and eventually patted it out. His ash had blown back into the car, into my hair. Spit woulda been nicer!
No wings in that car I assume. Yep! Fiery women are fine, but burning hair is not good.
[…] When Cars Had Wings […]
Vent windows! I suppose it made sense when cars and trucks didn’t have any air conditioning. And, a convertible cost extra … a lot extra. Still does. My ancient Pinto, from the very first model year, 1970, doesn’t have any vent windows. We lucked out our Pinto was one of the better made ones. It is able to pass the smog test with flying colors here in smog-conscious CA, which makes no sense to the smog testers.
Is this the Pinto you had in CO? The first 1971 Pintos went on sale in fall 1970. Ford started recalling Pintos by the end October for potential sticky accelerators. Pre-1976 model cars are exempt from emissions testing in CA, so I’m not sure why you would pay to have a 1971 Pinto tested to begin with. I’d be surprised if a car without a catalytic converter that runs on regular would pass emissions in CA.
You and Jack, Tim. Life is good on the open road!!
“I was suddenly left with nothing in my hands but a handful of crazy stars.”
Jack Kerouac, On the Road
True. Perfect quote. Thanks, Rebecca.
Fun Tim. My first car actually had “wings”; a big boat, Chrysler Imperial with fins and lots of chrome!
Fins, wings and chrome were fun. I had a ’56 Cadillac that had big sliver bumper boobs. Thanks, Brad.
Nice!
A nice one.
Many days are gone. Which is all right. We’re just not seeing the coming new days clearly. 😉
Be good.
Thanks, Brian.
Lol!
Gone in this city. You’re lucky if you can break 20 in taffic here.
Memories of “Hiway Star”! xx
You don’t have to drive for to hit the open roads out here. Thanks, Resa.
True!
As long as you have enough money to pay for the joyride gas…those days are still here. 🙂
My cruising car gets 40 mpg, so it doesn’t take much cash for me to cruise. Thanks, Mary.
I do remember those days – riding in the parents car. Also remember those cars being absolute tanks…hmm maybe those days are not gone as today’s EVs weigh the same if not twice as much as those old steel cars did.
I’m sure the EVs weigh more that the old steel cars. EV’s weigh so much the guardrails on the roads can’t stop them. I had a ’56 Cadillac Seville 2 door. It was a tank with tits. I think the drivers side door weighed more than my Mazda MX-5. Thanks, Brian.
Nice
Enjoyed your enthusiasm with this topic. I have so many great cruisin’ around memories.
Thanks, Audrey. So many fun memories of cruising days. I read your post about your dark times and recent loss of Prince Oscar. WP won’t let me post on your blog (a common issue for me with WordPress). He sounded like a wonderful dog. Sorry for your loss of the Prince. It’s so hard to lose our loved ones. .
Thank you for your kind comment. I really appreciate the feedback and attempt. I wasn’t aware folks had a hard time commenting on WordPress. How frustrating.
It’s weird and not consistent. I heard my blog became hard to comment for awhile. My comments dropped to only a few per post for awhile. They are still pretty low. The upside is at the same time spam comments dropped from hundreds a day to one or two a week, and those are often legitimate followers in the middle of a thread. Go figure.
Or are they!
Thanks, CP.

nice post
Older cars have something new cars don’t, a soul.
Thanks, DBE.
