Urban Olympics

Urban Warriors

After a week of lectures on Medieval Mystics and Masters that kept us out late every night, I ended the week photographing the Urban Olympics put on by a downtown charter school. Various professional offices and other businesses put teams together to compete in silly events, such as mop javalin throwing, toilet plunger toss, a rely race that included a mad dash in high heels  — tag the rider for the tricycle slalom — tag the backward skateboard racer — tag the office chair drag racer — and lastly, tag the tricyclist for the final speed run. There was waterboarding, a 100 yard dash, urban bowling with orange barrels and shopping carts, water fights, and other events. Cherry/See/Reames Architects, who shares office space with ARC, and one of our staff members participated in the event.

    • Thanks, Lavinia. Every year the Institute of Medieval Studies at UNM has a Spring Lecture series that we attend. This year’s was fantastic as usual with lectures on Hildegard of Bingen and Joachim of Flore; al-Farabi and Avicenna; Yeshe Tsogyal; Meister Echart; Moses Maimonides; Rumi and Medieval Sufism. We also heard an Oud concert by Rahim AlHaj. The lectures are given by the top scholars in their fields. After the lectures, we go to receptions where we eat, drink and visit with the speakers and get their insights on life, the universe and everything.

  1. This was a Civic Plaza yesterday? One of the women from either ARC or CSR came in and asked us if we knew what was happening over there and we didn’t know about it. Looks zany – haven’t had time to breathe. For the last two weeks my mother has been hallucinating and getting very befuddled – it has taken an inordinate amount of my time. Work is slow but lots to do to TRY to generate business…eek out anything I can to get caught-up – it has been a terrible first quarter – I am upside down. Haven’t had that happen in years. Mom had a neurology appt yesterday – we learned a lot – might be hyper thyroid problem that has caused this rapid change – might be fixable – the good news,…but I’ve been to numerous doctor’s appointments and at her house helping her…then she fell……

Last night kept the shop open for the All That Glitters is on gold Friday night for summer thing…I did not have ONE visitor much less customer.

    Frustrating.

    • Thanks! The weather was really great for the Urban Olympics, and it’s even better today — you are definitely missing the enchantment of Albuquerque’s beautiful weather. Last weekend, however, we had hurricane winds and dust that wasn’t much fun.

      • For years I”ve spent time between ABQ, Seattle and San Diego and when I’m not in ABQ I miss it! We had some similar weather here, high winds, like you. Now its a glorious sunny day. I”m east of San Diego at a higher mountain elevation. You really have taken some amazing shots of “my” city and are truly an excellent artist! Great eye, great processing, great color. You elevate all of ABQ to ‘art’!
