The Devil’s In The Dually

I left the office late this evening, so I had to do a drive-by of the clouds and contrails at sunset. While I was sitting behind a dually at the light, I noticed the Devil staring at me through the tailgate. He was using the holes my headlights made reflecting in the tailgate to see what was going on. Satin is a shifty little devil when it comes to shapes and reflections.

I was late because we replaced 55 fluorescent fixtures on our tenant’s side of the building with 55 LED fixtures. It was quite an undertaking, and I can feel rigor mortis settling in trying to stiffen up my joints. I’ll be contorted and stiff by morning like when Silver gets a case of Cater-Mortis.

The Battle For Elms No More

Armed with chainsaws, chipper at hand, under a clear blue sky, they made their first assault on the army of elm trees controlling the southern border. Boom! The aerial attacks from inside the bucket methodically cut down the enemy elms. Blasting chips from shredding limbs, trunks turned into mulch. Dumped in piles that will be spread on paths over cardboard the earth will reclaim.

Storm clouds started building in the early afternoon.

The sky turned dark to the east, the south and to the west. Thunder rumbled in the background.

The sky started to clear to the east and west before sunset, but clouds were exploding to the south.

The winds were pushing and reshaping colorful clouds to the south and west as the sun put itself to bed.

The Sacrifice

I buried a raccoon pup at dawn
Found him by the steps
Heartless and emptied
Secretly sacrificed
Under half-moon? Rose at two
Such a mystery

With last rites fitting any innocent soul
Tucked in under spadefuls of sandy soil
Laid to rest, secured for eternity
A spark of life lit
Snuffed, sacrificed
So much misery

The poem above was inspired by a poor baby raccoon, gutted and left near our doorstep. I don’t know what killed it, but it seemed very sacrificial. I’m packing several day’s worths of photos into this post because of the possibility that other things will come up, and many of the photos not get posted.
