Sacrifice

A sad, true story of a very young racoon pup I found gutted near my doorstep as if it had been sacrificed.

Sacrifice
By Timothy Price

[Verse 1]
I buried a raccoon pup at dawn
Found him by the steps
Heartless and empty

[Chorus]
Another life lost
Dark world so cruel
Why should I care?
You silly old fool

[Vers 2]
Secretly sacrificed
Under half-moon that rose at two
Such a dark mystery

[Bridge]
A spark of life was lit
To be snuffed out so soon
A baby raccoon as a sacficial lamb
So much misery for such a little life

[Chorus]
Another life lost
Dark world so cruel
Why should I care?
You silly old fool

[Otro]
With last rites fitting
Any innocent soul
Tucked in under spadefuls of sandy soil
Laid to rest, secured for eternity

Dusk

  1. Awww dang… Perfect music and song for this sad occasion. Life is so very cruel but, in this case, we know it’s part of the circle of life.

Oh, I see in the comments you saved the owlet! Thank goodness for that.

  2. A sad but excellent video and music, Tim. Looks like your trail cam caught something. As Annie Dillard once said, “Nature is red in tooth and claw”.

    • True. I figured the trail cam would catch more activity nightly, but it doesn’t. These were all a few captures apart. Thanks, Lavinia.

  3. I’m so sorry you found that! We’ve had so many baby birds destroyed by hawks and ravens. We try to keep the predators away from the bird nests, but they always find a way to steal eggs and babies. Thank you for treating the little creature with love and respect.

  4. Sad, and scary. What is with gory sacrifices? Life isn’t filled with enough horror?

Thank you for the burial, Tim! And the video and song are hauntingly good. xx
