Captain Jack

Captain Jack. Lyrics and Music by Billy Joel.Vocals by Timothy Price

Captain Jack from Billy Joel’s 1973 album, Piano Man, is my latest cover. I first heard this song around 1974 after I purchased Piano Man. I fell in love with it. It’s not at all biographical; however, I had friends who got messed up with drugs in the 70s. A few died of overdoses, and a few committed suicide. Seeing how drugs destroyed people’s lives, I never had a reason to experiment with them.

These spent poppies go well with Captain Jack.

  1. Good choices for this day. Captain Jack was buried deep down in old memories. Love the flower pics too.

  2. Just noticed, that I forgot to write my comment. During the day, I listened more than once. A really great version.

  3. oh I love this Tim and your lyrics are awesome and YES to your voice perfect in this range👏👏👏!
I never took drugs either for the fear of! Soo sorry about your friends. 💓💔💓

  4. Very impressive cover Tim – might be able to hear that song on his TV concert tonight. I I always wonder the number of people who hear the peppy melody and don’t take the time to understand the lyrics. I thank my father for insuring I NEVER took the easy path out of reality – the threat of him beating me severely if he found out any of his kids did drugs was enough to never touch the stuff..of course, like you, I also had the examples around me and lost a lot of friends who opted for the plunge or left those around them to deal with the mess when they ate the bullet.

    • Thanks, Brian. You had lots of good reasons to say no to drugs. When I was in middle school there were various anti drug campaigns that included movies that were supposed to scare us straight like the drivers ed movies. I remember the druggie types would comment during the movies like “Oh wow man! It’s not like that at all!”
