I’ve visited a couple of impressive troglodyte settlements in France and was lucky enough to visit a family in Tunisia who have carved their home out of rock. Your images of Mesa Verde show the signs of an amazing community.
I can’t remember the name of the place in Tunisia, just that it was a home, still lived in and extended into the rocks as needed when the family grew. It was somewhere in the same area as the original Star Wars film set.
What an extraordinary place Timothy – I hope the climb up there wasn’t as steep as it looks in that last photo – I’d have been suffering vertigo I think!

Sounds scary either way but probably worth it from your pictures!
