Route 66 and All That

Route66_Signs

The last time I photographed the Route 66 Diner, I believe three years ago now and the wall at the entrance off Central Ave. (old Route 66) didn’t have all the old signs and Route 66 memorabilia nailed to it. The mess of signs makes for an interesting collage under the distorting eye of my 17mm lens.

  1. The first photo really looks like a piece of art (again!). I love it. And I would like to drop into that diner too!!! I’ve only seen such diners in the movie and we don’t have those in the Netherlands. I like the classic look of it, the 50’s look… 😉

    • When you come to NM, we’ll got the the 66 Diner. Back in the mid to late 1980’s, there were several new buildings built in this ’50’s reto style. They all started with restaurants in them, but I think the 66 Diner is the only one of those restaurants to still occupy its retro style building.

  2. My parents took my sister and I on vacation from Florida to California via Route 66. We visited the petrified forest (a must-see) and other attractions along the way. The last time I was in the area, there was an expressway instead of route 66. An American Icon is lost.

    Thanks for the pictures.

    • Thanks. I-40 replaced route 66, and bypassed a lot of towns, which basically killed most of them. I-25 crosses I-40 in Albuquerque, so we are the crossroads of the two interstates that span the country east to west, and north to south.

      • New Mexico is well worth visiting.

Florida has I-75 and I-10 and they meet near Lake City. It’s usually a zoo of cars and trucks. When an expressway is built, communities are divided and towns dry up and blow away.

There used to be a series called Route 66. I think it’s one of the reasons my parents wanted to travel on it.

        • I don’t have TV, so I haven’t heard of the series. I have a photo book of Route 66 at night from Nob HIll to West Central that you can flip through online at http://www.adoramapix.com/elcheo/book/route-66. When I did the photos, I hadn’t heard of Breaking Bad. I did a photo of the hotdog stand that I hear was in one of the first Breaking Bad episodes, but I didn’t like how it came out, so I didn’t put it in the book. I probably would have gone out and reshot it had I known about Breaking Bad at the time. I’ve never seen Breaking Bad, but it’s apparently made Albuquerque famous for better or worse.
