Laurie has to share her cereal and coffee with Beaker most mornings. Guildenstern thinks we have things all wrong — “one should have birds for breakfast, not have breakfast with birds” he meows — but he knows Beaker and René are formidable adversaries and stays clear of both of them. René is slowly getting better at flying and I’m slowly getting better at sneaking in better lighting to catch him in flight.
As we begin this Advent season, I can report relative peace in the house — Guildenstern was lying (okay sitting) on the couch with a lamb.
Only in New Mexico can you buy red and green chile wines and park your horses downtown.
All of our kitties, with the exception of Diné, made at least one attempt to go out in the snow. Rosencrantz was the most rambunctious snow kitty, making several laps around the house throughout the day, running wild, and kicking up snow with his kitty heels. Guildenstern made it to the edge of the steps before making a u-turn and coming back inside. Mama Manx got to the bottom of the steps before she decided to come back up the steps and bring a few snow flakes inside.
Rosencrantz stepped on my iPhone that was laying on the counter next to my computer. He activated Siri, which asked him what he wanted. He meowed, and when I looked at the phone Siri had brought up the Wikipedia for cat. I tried to photograph it with Rosencrantz stepping on the phone, but I got too much glare of the phone’s surface, so I had to prop the phone up against my coffee cup. Rosencrantz still wanted to step on it, and stuck around for the photo. Rosencrantz is also a bit of a magical cat as he can apparently go through walls. We’ve let him out and then all of a sudden he’s back in and vice versa. It the second photo I got him half way in and out of the screen.
Rosencrantz commemorated his kitty version of Dia de los Muertos by being half ghost / half black cat. The photo is the result of an experiment using my 4X5 view camera, and “ghetto scanning” the negative.
I seem to get constant kitty help these days. I walked out of the store to discover a small super cell was forming overhead. I drove straight into the storm and got a great lightning show on the way home. For all the lightning and thunder over the past 24 hours, we only received 2/10 of an inch of rain.
Laurie’s annotated bibliography about code switching became a “cat-otated bibliography” with “cat switching” as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern took turns checking out our progress. Guildenstern was very persistent, and insisted that lying on our papers, computers and arms was great help as we worked late into the night. The geese are foraging in one of Wagner’s fields every morning.
The egg sandwich I made for breakfast seemed particularly worthy of a photo. Mama Manx was walking around the yard like a kitty queen, and the answer to our morning congestion was all the smoke in the air from people burning their fireplaces (haze in last photo).
With fall comes green chiles and there’s nothing like a leisurely breakfast with Guildenstern and René (Laurie doing the photo and the other cats on the table or chairs). We had huevos rancheros made with freshly peeled green chiles from Wagner’s Farm.
