Canceled!

Gigi asked if I was ever going home. There was an interesting question after I woke up to text messages that my flight to Frankfurt was canceled and had been rescheduled to fly out of Edinburgh to Zürich on Sunday and the fly from Zürich to Frankfurt on Monday morning. The problem with that schedule was I was scheduled to fly from Frankfurt to the States on Monday morning, also.

The reason the flight was canceled was due to a strike by the German airline workers on Friday. Which was planned to create major disruptions for people traveling back home from Easter break. To make a long story short, my flight back to the States has been moved forward a week so I could stick with the new flight schedule if I had to, because flights and hotels were filling up and prices were going up on whatever was left by the minute. After a lot of searching, I got a better scheduled flight back to Frankfurt on Saturday.

Freyja will be happy to get another week of morning walks in.

John gave me a tour of the Verdant Works Museum, and gave me an excellent history of the jute milling industry that made Dundee a boom town in the 19th century. Visit the Verdant Works Museum website for the history of the rise and fall of jute milling in Dundee in the 19th and 20th centuries: https://www.dundeeheritagetrust.co.uk/attraction/verdant-works/

Mostly women and children worked in the mills

Then we went up to the top of the Law, which gives people a 360 view of Dundee and the surrounding area below.

  1. Glad you have every thing worked out. Have fun during your extra days there and I have enjoyed going on vacation with you. Thank you. I’m sure your welcoming committee will be thrilled to see you.

  2. Bummer about the delay, but hopefully you can enjoy a few more quality sites to stay your desire to get home a spell. Cool maritime memories.

  3. Well you sure made up for the ‘lost morning’! These are beautiful pictures Timothy. I’ve forwarded the link to Verdant Works. They don’t man their messages 24/7 but they will get to it soon. Lovely pics and glad you got a wee nosey round the dock later. Originally the Discoveru and these other ships were to all be berthed where the Unicorn etc is and it was to be a maritime museum but the Discovery cos of its historical value and Dundee then calling itself the ‘City of Discovery,’ got its own place. See yah later….

    • A maritime museum would have been amazing. As a desert dweller, ships fascinate me. Thanks for sending in the link to Verdant Works. Their website is amazing, as is the museum. I am so grateful you and John took the time to give me a tour.

      • It has been great meeting you Timothy. We’ve had a braw time. We quite liked touring our own toon! Yeah a Maritime Museum would have wonderful where the Aqua sports is but alas they quickly threw up the Museum for the Discovery where they had berthed it when they brought it from London who had had it for years. Part of that was to get the museum up because when they first brought the ship here all you could see round was that and it is quite small. In fact it is amazing that so many folks were on it. So in order to make that a big draw and for it to start earning its keep, they got Discovery Point built PDQ right where it is. At that time there was no V&A so there as more of a join between the point and the other ships.

  4. WOW….well travel these days is a little more challenging perhaps BUT you make the most of your time wherever you may be. I think of all these great photos I love the ones of The Unicorn the best….amazing ship…..imagining those voyages and the sense of adventure back then. Hope the rest of your trip goes as planned!

    • On Wednesday, I was talking to Laurie after riding the bus back from Shey’s. That Grey Heron was fishing in front of me, so we got on FaceTime and Laurie watched it catching fish. Thanks, Resa.
