It’s that time of the year when the garden spiders are building their webs in the flowers and pathways. Last night I moved the hose from one drip system to the other, and felt something crawling on me — it was one of the zipper spiders. It had apparently built its web across the path and I didn’t see it in the low light of dusk. I felt bad that I had inadvertently destroyed her web. I moved her over to some tall grasses and she crawled off me into the grasses where she could build another web. Walking through her web reminded me of an old Far Side comic where a couple of spiders have a web built on the end of a slide and one spider is telling the other “If we pull this off, we’ll eat like kings!” You can see a copy of the comic here: http://blogerinblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/eat-like-kings.jpg.

Arachnophobia = no looky at photos, I am serious. Sorry!
Our place would not be good for you then, we have spiders about anywhere you look.
Sissy John is, these spiders don’t bite I dont think. Your a kind heart love your pictures.
These spiders can certainly bite and will if provoked. While they are not considered deadly, any spider bite can become serious.
John’s not a sissy, arachnophobia is real for a lot of people. I know other people who can’t look at my photos of spiders and snakes.
Oh then be lucky you didn’t get bit while trying to save it with your kind heart!
Plenty here and they are still small, Need to fatten up.
Our spiders are all fat and happy. Since we have forests of sunflowers and bamboo with lots of roses and wildflowers, there are critters galore for the spiders to eat.
Beautiful spider photos, Timothy. We have had more of the small whitish-green crab spider variety this year, fewer orb weavers and big-bodied types about this summer. Quite a few honeybees got nabbed by crabs while visiting the catnip blooms.
Thanks, Lavinia. We’ve had more rain this year, so we’ve had a lot more of the large spiders. There are 3 zipper spiders and a couple of other large spiders with webs built between six rose bushes in one garden.
Stunning
Thanks, Janet!
Like many people, I’m not keen on spiders, but their webs are truly breathtaking feats. Great pictures.
Thanks, Julia!
