Dragonfly with a Mohawk

I hadn’t seen this dragonfly before. If you think dragonflies are six legged sissies, fluttering about like four winged fairies — think again. This one’s sporting a bleached mohawk and yellow tattoos. He’s one bad dude of a dragonfly who stood his ground against a macro lens.

  1. Nice detailed photo! Some face on that guy. Looks like he could have been right out of a Dr. Who episode. I’m not sure how it works with Dragonfiles, but honeybees one can get an idea of the age of the field bee by how much fuzz is on the thorax. Younger bees look teddybearish.

    • Thanks, Lavinia! I don’t know enough about dragonflies to know if their age a fuzziness are related. But this dragonfly might just be a rebellious teen.

        • I got an email from a friend in the south Valley who said they got 8/10 of an inch of rain Tuesday night and 2.2 inches last night. A staff member who lives in the north valley said she had a gully washer at her house last night. I guess it all rained out by the time it got to our house because we only got “quatro gotas” as the Spaniards used to say. The only thing that’s been raining at our house in the past few days is cotton from the cottonwoods.

          • Well glad you are getting some in some places. Report I read said 5 states are rapidly running out of water and NM and CA were the top 2. Hope some of that rain gets over to your place! First fire of season here, 6 miles away! It seems they put it out. Phew, close call! Cheers, have a great 4th!

  2. Fabulously shots of these amazing creatures Timothy! They are beautiful! Today I actually saw love bugs, we don’t usually get those till September and October. We still have grasshoppers and Cicadas around. I really love these dragon flies, one of my few favorite Insects!

    • Thanks, Holly. Dragon flies are so cool. He get a pretty good variety of them out here.
