The Big Crane

No Sandhill Cranes yet, just a big industrial crane. One of the five HVAC units on the roof of the office building went out a few weeks ago, and we had to replace it. Today was the day. Robert with ABQ Elite has been taking care of our HVAC for the past two years. He replaced the unit with the help of one of Gino’s cranes. They had to take off one of the iron grates that covers the HVAC units, lift out the old unit, and lift the new unit into place. Robert’s technicians, Gino and Mr. Willams, the crane operator, were a great team and had the roof grate off, the units replaced, and the roof grate back on in an hour’s time. Mr. Williams is a skilled crane operator, moving the equipment with great precision.

This video shows an hour’s work compressed into two minutes. There is music with the video.

  1. Fun to watch isn’t it? Many years ago an roof mounted AC unit had to be replaced in the middle of our 40-acre factory building. A heavy lift helicopter was used to lift the old unit out and to hoist the new unit in place. Quite spectacular to watch.

    • I can imagine that was a major event. Hard to imagine a forty acre building let alone managing a facility that size. Thanks, Brad.

      • We had three buildings that size on the 500-acre campus. I found it easy to get lost inside until I learned the column numbering scheme; the office was always at A1. The rest was just math and directions.

        • Gino called me first thing this morning and asked if could go out and film Mr Williams operating a big LinkBelt crane on a construction site. I did.

Amazon and Meta have huge facilities out here. Meta is on 750 acres south of Albuquerque, and Amazon has a 465,000 SF building on the west side of town.

          • Not bad. Each of the ones I mentioned early averaged 1,000,000 square feet. One has to wonder how much stuff we need if Amazon is building MORE 500,000 foot warehouses.

            • I think Amazon employs around 1500 in that facility. From what I understand, it’s mostly staffed by robots, however. I think a lot of the staff are local delivery drivers who pickup packages from the robots and deliver them around the metro area.

    • Thanks, Samantha. They don’t have a website, but Gino asked me to film another crane at a construction site today.

  2. Crane operators are a talented bunch. I find myself watching in fascination as they manoeuvre items with such precision. Nice music to accompany your video!

  3. Cool post, Tim.
I’ve always been fascinated with construction.
Of course when it’s out front of ones home for 2 years, it can become tedious.
Nonetheless, a lot of skill is required.
OH, and driving the big rigs is admirable.
The video is great Tim! Thank you!
