Set Up Us The Bomb

P1040924b

This is a photo collage I put together with a photo of my dad working in a quonset hut on the Pacific island of Elugelab in the Enewetak atoll in October 1952 while working on the first hydrogen bomb detonated on Elugelab island on November 1, 1952. The foreground is a reflection of me in a nickel plated revolver with an apparition of the revolver surrounding my face.  My dad also worked on Operation Teapot and Operation Redwing, both hydrogen bomb tests in Nevada, in 1955 and 1956. In both of those hydrogen bomb tests he was caught in the fallout from the explosions and was radioactive for quite some time after each of the blasts. I was born in 1958, and I have often wondered how much my cancer might have been influenced by my dad’s exposure to radiation from those tests.

The title of the post is a part of a quote from the 1991 arcade game “Zero Wing”. You can learn more about the game and later video from my post “Somebody Set Up Us The Bomb” from January 21, 2014.

Somebody Set Up Us The Bomb

The title is another line taken from the 1991 introduction to an adaption of the arcade game “Zero Wing” that had really bad Japanese-to-English translation (It’s also included in the intro to the video All Your Base Are Belong To Us). The crew working on cleaning up the smoke in the office is moving and cleaning everything. They pulled out a computer bag that had been sitting forgotten in a corner for years that had an old Macintosh Powerbook G3 in it. I plugged it in, and turned on the old PowerBook and it still had Mac OS 9.1 on it. Not long after I got it booted it gave me a system error with the bomb. Although nostalgic, I don’t miss the days before OS X and iOS.

All Your Chair Are Belong To Us

Guildenstern

Every time Laurie gets up from of her chair at the end of the table, Guildenstern gets in it. Once she moves Guildenstern off her chair and sits back down, René bombs his way over to her, flying from chair to chair (three chairs in all) to get across the counter and finally onto the table and over to Laurie.  I didn’t have the best lighting for capturing René in flight in these shots, so I set up a flash and tried to get him to do is chair to chair flight again, but he would have nothing to do with flying to the chair with that new fangled light source off to the side of it.

I adapted today’s title from the video “All Your Base Are Belong To Us”, a video that goes back to 2001. The title of the video was taken from a line in the 1991 introduction to an adaption of the arcade game “Zero Wing” that had really bad Japanese-to-English translation. Around our house, whenever you get up from a chair, a cat or a bird is likely to occupy it because to them “all your chair are belong to us!”
