Marina at Marina Kanavaki, who is one of Resa’s Art Gown models, claimed our Pear Tree. The pear tree is hidden between our giant Dr. Huey on the left, other rose bushes on the right, and a wall of black bamboo behind it. After it blooms and leafs out fully, it blends in with the bamboo. Marina calls it her “incognito” tree. Although it looks like a small, tree it’s currently around 10 feet tall. It’s apical dominant, and before I pruned it into it’s ball shape in February, it was double it’s current height in the shape of a cone.

In The Heat, A Battle

Laurie pointed out that there was a bluebird in the bamboo being attacked by a hummingbird — by the time I got outside with my camera, the bluebird was standing its ground atop the pear tree next to the bamboo. I did get one shot of the hummingbird confronting the bluebird.

So much for 105 @ 5:00. Our weather station reported a wind chill of 111º F (43.9º C) at 3:47 pm yesterday afternoon, about the time the birds were battling (see the last photo).

Springtime

The sky was cloudy most of the day with occasional sunshine slipping through. The temperature got up to 80 F, and our early blooming pear tree popped its first bloom. A few of the red tulips are blooming and a lot more tulips are thinking about it — with the positive signs of spring, I got out my macro lens. I also got the rest of the iris separated and planted this afternoon, and ran drippers and soaker hoses, but I really need to irrigate. I’ll go out at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning to see if there’s water in the irrigation ditch, and if the gate’s unlocked, but I’m not counting on either.
