Little House On The Lava

J Volcano

In 1947, students from St. Joseph’s College ignited a pile of tires in the J Volcano, causing panic in Albuquerque as some people thought it was going to erupt. Later attempts at the same prank failed to cause even a stir. Nowadays, the pranksters would be charged with multiple felonies, smacked with harsh penalties and prison time.

      • Thank.you. This will give me hours of entertainment….(interest). It’s taking me back a few years when I and a fellow artist from Huston drove from Rosslyn through high desert to Santa fe. We were on our way to visit friends in Santa Fe and to visit Obiquiu – Georgia Okeef’s home. I loved it. When I think of the Rift Valley I tend to think of Kenya….but now I know there is so much more to learn about another Rift Valley. Amazing how many volcanic areas there area…

  1. There are quite a few volcanoes up the road from us in AZ. I don’t think anyone has ever tried to set them off before.
    Crazy kids!

  2. We’ve seen these from the top of Sandia. Amazing how far away they really are, but look so close at the time. We’ve also hiked an active volcano in Hawaii. Feeling the ground being warm as we walked over it is a surreal experience.

    • These volcanoes are close by on the west mesa. From the Crest, you would see Mt. Taylor, 50 miles west of Albuquerque standing at 11,300 feet. That would be surreal to walk on an active volcano. Thanks, Brad.

  3. Okay, I am going to have to admit that the student prank was pretty clever – I’m sure the eco-police would have a cow these days.

    • Eco-police would through the book at them, and send them to Hawaii to be sacrificed in a live volcano. Thanks, Brian.

  4. That is a clever prank. I didn’t know NM had volcanoes. I’m reminded of when I went to Hawaii and there was a house for sale for crazy cheap, but it was right next to the lava fields. I guess that’s the price of cheap housing
