The #dragon has a really ancient origin. Its name derives from the Latin “Feriae Augusti”, meaning “Augustus Rest.” The festival was in fact established by the Roman Emperor Augusto in 18 a. As a rest period after the end of agricultural work. Initially, the party was held on August 1st (though indeed the celebrations lasted for several days), but later the Catholic Church moved the date to 15, so that it coincided with the recurrence of the Assumption of Mary. In the Roman Empire, the day was held in an atmosphere of great feast. The games and the jokes were so many and the main activity was the race of horses and other shooting animals.

  1. Hi Tim, the sunset was spectacular and the photos are great! You’ve got some incredible evenings. The rainbow looks like it glows in the dark, and my favorite is the third photo, stunning sky with the foliage in the foreground. Wishing you all the best with your cooler. ~ Mia

    • Hi Mia. I ended up diving into the abyss of our old chicken shed of doom and retrieved a motor I had saved from another cooler. The cooler is rebuilt and working. The rainbow and sunset were the rewards for all the ups and downs getting on and off the roof a dozen times to rebuild the swamp.

      • Along with the motor you needed, I bet there are all kinds of fabulous things in the “chicken shed of doom”, truly fun times to go through that kind of stuff, best to do that when you’re not in need of something particular or in a hurry. Up and down to the roof, I hope you were counting your steps. Thank you for sharing the rewards. Beautiful photos, Tim!

    • Hi Cathy! Swampers work great when it’s dry, and it’s normally very dry out here, but they are a little iffy during monsoon season. It’s funny. In the 70’s when we had an energy crises, the local government wanted everyone to use swamp coolers, so they gave all kinds of tax credits for converting to swampers. We even had a really stupid “Southwest” hybrid HVAC system with swampers on one of the buildings our office is in for years. The system was worthless in an 100 year old, uninsulated building, so I had to put six air-condtioners in the windows each summer for 10 years until I finally managed to get an electrical upgrade and regular HVAC units installed in 2010. Now here we are 40 years later (after the stupid 70’s) when energy is cheap and abundant, but water has been scarce, the same local governments are giving tax credits to drain the swamps and switch to refrigerated air.

      • Government, whatever the level, has never been known for being farsighted. We know computers prefer an arid environment, so using swamp coolers probably wasn’t the best idea for that reason alone. But in the 70s, maybe that wasn’t a consideration.

        • It’s so dry out here that swamps hardly effect computers. It’s just whatever crises the media and governments are manufacturing at any given time.
