On baby trees, I have no idea. But arborists seem to know which are which. People planted the male trees for several years in our area trying to cut down on cotton, but now male cottonwoods are banned.
Because they release allergens and are not native. There is a whole list of banned plants and trees that contribute to allergies that are illegal to plant in the Albuquerque area.
