Bold, Fearless & Funky

Marble Brewing Company, http://www.marblebrewery.com, is another award winning craft brewery in Albuquerque. Awarded the 2014 Great American Beer Festival Small Brewing Company Brewer of the Year award by the Brewers Association, they have an impressive operation with the brewing, tap room and bottling all on site at the corner of Marble and 1st Street near downtown Albuquerque. A food truck was parked on the street serving hamburgers and French fries to the patrons spending their lunch or a leisurely Friday afternoon at the brewery.

I took the title for today’s blog off of Leah Black’s business card. She is the events & social media coordinator for Marble, and a pro at drawing drafts. After Ben interviewed Ted Rice (head of Marble) for The Beer Trale, http://www.thebeertrale.com, Leah was very accommodating and allowed us to roam freely in the brewhouse to observe, film and photograph the operation.

The Beauty And The Beer

A18W2819a

Ben Lolli is producing a series called The Beer Trale at http://www.thebeertrale.com, which is about the people behind craft beer. Ben worked for me in 2009 as one of a team of techs who inventoried technology in our local school district. He is on the road interviewing some of Albuquerque’s award winning breweries, and he asked me to help out with still photography and video. Last night we visited La Cumbre Brewery (http://lacumbrebrewing.com/aboutus.html) owned by Master Brewer Jeff Erway and his wife Laura — school teachers turned master brewers — who now produce award winning beer.

Church at Las Golondrinas

A18W2512

One of the first buildings you come across at Ranchos de las Golondrinas is the church. The church is the north building of a hacienda that has a central plaza with a well in the center and hornos for baking. Note the church has a pitched, tin roof, but the other buildings have flat roofs. The church originally had a flat roof as well, and the tin roof would have been added after 1850 when New Mexico became a US territory which opened up trade and goods to come in from the Eastern US. The ceiling of the church still has the horizontal vigas (timbers) that supported the original flat, dirt roof.

The interior of the church has simple benches for pews, an artisan crafted retablo at the altar, and hand carved Stations of the Cross (the Stations of the Cross are a modern addition, according to a docent).

Las Golondrinas

Las Golondrinas is a living museum on a 200 acre site a few miles south of Santa Fe. They are having their annual harvest festival this weekend and all the sites and industries, set mostly around the early to mid 19th Century, are operating. We spent most of the day there yesterday, and I have a lot of photos to process, so for today, I have a few abstractly representative photos.

October = Birthdays

DSCF1760

October is the birthday month for our family starting with Laurie’s mom, Laurie, Tristan, my mom, and finally me. Susan and I share the same birth date, and one of my best friends I grew up with was born 4 days after me. Laurie’s birthday was yesterday, and I made her a chocolate cake. She got a cute pair of purple suede shoes and a new set of watercolor brushes.

Psycho Kitty

IMG_0761

I was taking a shower, when I suddenly felt something grabbing my leg through the shower curtain. I had thoughts of Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “Psycho” when a psycho kitty suddenly burst into the shower.

But the bigger question is, why did I have a camera in the shower? Well, let me tell you, there are certain things you always need to have in the shower or bath with you — you never know when you will have to shoot — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvSZ_HQmZgQ!
