Fifteen

Looking east at Susan’s and Teagan’s Trees behind the snow-covered black bamboo.

We got four inches of wet, heavy snow last night that broke a lot of trees, causing power outages. We were without electricity for over 15 hours, and we still don’t have internet service. I’m using my phone as a hotspot for this post.

The snow laid Rebecca’s Black Bamboo down so we could see the trees behind the bamboo. I was out early, cutting up trees that had fallen across the road so people could get out and in.

Wañusqakunamanta*
By Timothy Price

Sacrificed
To the gods
Drown in the madness of his name

Smell of the dead
And their sins
Of the dead and their sins
Of the dead and their sins

Take me, take me on a boat to see Arkos
I can’t feel the sea on Arkos

Embrace the truth
And shake us free
Make us free to rise in the end

Meet a person
Of great heart
In custody to persevere

But the devil’s in the way
Yes, the devil’s in the way
Why’s the devil’s in the way

He digs down to the core
To the flesh
And
To the bones

*Wañusqakunamanta is “Of the Dead” in Quechua. I have been working on the song for a long time. Originally named Weird DST, I wrote the song intending to use it for my 2024 Daylight Savings Time protest song. The idea behind the asynchronization between the metered drums and bass and the unmetered guitar was to simultaneously feel in and out of time. I tried to make the lyrics as strange as the music. I didn’t post it on DST this year because I didn’t finish it in time for the time change. Given the state of the election, I took another look at the song and decided I might as well use it to make a statement about the 2024 election.

Jake Gate

My Saturday morning project was to install a post and fencing for a Jake Gate to keep Jake from wandering down the road when we want to leave him outside roaming around the property.

Jake

Oriana and Celina like to walk Jake down to Starbucks and get him a Pupachino. Normally, not much happens other than Jake gets lots of attention from strangers, which he loves, and between all the attention, the walk, and the Pupuchinos, he is worn out. When they brought Jake back this afternoon, he was wound up.

The story goes that on the way to Starbucks, Oriana dropped Erma’s card she was to use to pay for Erma’s order. When Oriana discovered she didn’t have the card, she ran back to the office to see if she left it at the office and then started looking for it on her way back to Starbucks.

Meanwhile, Jake got excited by all the commotion about the missing card, and Oriana taking off to run back to the office and pulled himself free from Celina. Celina said that instead of running after Oriana, Jake ran around the Starbucks building and ran up to the drive-up window, presumably to order another Pupachino. Celina extracted Jake from the drive-up window and met Oriana, who had not found Erma’s card.

On the way back to the office to tell Erma they had lost her card, Jake stopped to sniff and roll, and there was the card where Jake had stopped. They ran back to Starbucks, got Erma’s order, and ordered Jake another Pupachino as a reward for finding the card. All in the day in the life of a Cosmo Dog!

Safe

Pre-dawn

Workers have cleared the underbrush and cut down dead trees in the bosque along the levee. I feared for the Tangle Heart Tree, but alas, there is a live limb on the Tangle Heart Tree, so it is safe for the time being. The area where they have cleared around the trees looks great.
