Coyotes & Cockleburs

We had hard rain on and off this afternoon.

When Jake and I went on our early morning walk, we encountered a pack of three coyotes. We were walking on the lower bank, and the coyotes ran up on top of the levee and watched as we walked by.

As you may know, Jake loves to lift his leg on tumbleweeds. Currently, the tumbleweeds are green and soft; however, Jake discovered cockleburs on the lower bank. While the cockleburs are also still green, they are nice and scratchy.

A short reprieve from the rain.

The clouds were gathering again when I left for the store to get cheese for the cats. It started raining hard again. I sat in the car and did Duolingo until the rain let up enough to where I wouldn’t get soaked walking into the store.

My rain gauge recorded 4/10 of an inch of rain this afternoon, bringing us up to nearly an inch of rain for the month of June.

Jakey Poo Got A New Pair Of Shoes

Sunrise

Given the fact that my car has been reading the pavement temperatures upward of 120º F (48.9º C) the last few days, and Jake has been showing discomfort with the hot sidewalks and roads, Oriana suggested I get him some shoes.

Jake was not happy with his new shoes when I first put them on him.

But after a walk on the hot sidewalk, rocks and pavement at lunchtime, he decided they were alright after all.

Jake was happy after our mile walk around the block.

Jake’s Dream

I answered a phone call a few weeks ago:

Me: “¡Dígame!”

Caller: “This is the Corrales Fire Chief. This is not an Emergency! Do you have a few minutes to talk?”

Me: “Yes!”

CFC: “Someone named Jake requested we install a fire hydrant on your road. Do you know who Jake is?”

Me: “Jake’s my dog!”

CFC: “Oh! Ok! That makes sense. I guess.”

Me: “Jake loves the fire hydrant on the west side of the drainage ditch.”

CFC: “[A slight chuckle] Your neighbors on Dixon Road gave us right-of-way across the eastern edge of their property for us to install a fire hydrant on the north side of your road. The hydrant will be half way between your house and the house at the top of the road. Can we have permission to face it toward your road and have access to it from your road?”

Me: “Of course. Jake will be a happy dog to have a fire hydrant much closer to our house!”

CFC: “I suppose he will. Thank you! Bye!”

Me: “¡Adiós!”

KITTEN!

Lane and Suzette brought home a new kitten yesterday. We went over to visit the sweet kitty. He’s nine weeks old and super cute. They are still thinking about a name for him.

“What’s that you say? I’m all ears!”

And snuggly

“Wait a minute! What’s that big yellow creature lying on the floor?”

“OMG! I don’t remember a dawg in the contract!”

Giving Jake “Mad Dogs!”

With those looks he could be called, “Mad Dog Murphy!”

As with all things feline, Jake paid no attention to the kitten.

Giving Jake the spiked hairdos and all those mad dogs made him dog-tired.

Storm clouds at dawn

We got a downpour for about 30 minutes at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. Several staff members stood outside under the portal at the office to watch the rain. Thunder was on a constant roll. Lightning struck close by while the rain poured and rivers ran through the parking lot. One staff member noted, “I’ll get home tonight and the weather will report 7/100 inch of rain.” I told her it would be at least a 1/10 of an inch. When I got home, our rain gauge read 0.11 inches of rain.

As I was leaving the office after the rain let up, several rescue vehicles raced down Alameda Blvd with their lights on and sirens blaring. They pulled up to the flood control channel, which you can see here: https://wp.me/p1yQyy-bGb. Water was roaring down the channel when I drove over it on my way home. I heard the news helicopter flying around above us, so I looked up the news channel and someone had been washed away by the current in town, and a body was pulled from the water where the flood control channel flows into the river. I looked up the rainfall for Albuquerque today. The report showed 0.39 inches of rain for the zip code where the person was swept away by the runoff in the channel. What might seem like little rain produces a lot of deadly runoff in our high desert.
