RX-8 on Ice
We had a light snow most of the day, which left a dusting of snow on top of a hardened layer of thin ice that was not much fun to scrape off the windshield and windows. After 40 minutes on the road, I stopped at the post office in Corrales to pick up the mail, and noticed that the ice and snow stuck on the hood was only a little wind-streaked.
First Snow in 2014
We got our first snow of 2014. Even in color, the snow on the black bamboo makes a B&W photo. My B&W panorama of the Sandias taken through the windshield while driving on Alameda is “not even”, and the last photo is looking west at the volcanos from Lomas and I-25.

Sixty at 60
I got a “drive by” of a 1960 Chevy Biscayne at 60 MPH on the way home.
Totally Trucked
Since I couldn’t very well fit 12 foot long sheets of corrugated roofing and other building supplies in my Mazda RX-8 (second photo), I used The Home Depot’s rental truck to bring home construction material for my “catio” re-roofing project. The truck is a big Ford Super Duty that only costs $20 for the first 75 minutes.
Hot Wheels
The weather was sunny, with no wind and a high in the 50’s, so I took my cameras out for a walk around downtown. As I was crossing Central Ave. (Old Route 66) at sixth street, the guy in the blue car with big wheels started honking his horn. When I looked in his direction, he was making a gesture for me to take a photo, so I grabbed a quick shot as the light turned green, just before he drove off up Central. He looked pretty happy that I got the shot. The second photo is a little “abstract reflectionism” on Gold Ave. And then I got a “drive-by” photo of the moonrise over the Sandias as I was turning onto Coors Rd. on my way home.
Old Cars, Old Macs & A Selectric II
In the relative ages of cars, typewriters and computers, do an old VW bus and an old Macintosh SE/30 fit the same virtual vintages, as compared to an old IBM Selectric II and a blurry old coupe from the late 1940’s or early 1950’s?
Turn, Turn, Turn – Winding up my Wankel
I finally replaced my 2006 Mazda 5 the insurance company totaled with with a 2009 Mazda RX8. This little beauty only has 28,500 miles, and has a 1.3 liter Renesis/Wankel rotary engine that pumps out 238 HP. The car is solid, perky, responsive and really fun to drive. It’s not as fast as Laurie’s Speed 3, but now we have two red Mazda sports cars. Laurie took these photos of me in the RX8 with her iPhone in the Credit Union’s parking lot. The car was halfway in the shade of the building so the color is a little off.
I got a great deal on the car from the owners of Pho 79, a Vietnamese restaurant located at 2007 Candelaria NE, for those of you who live in Albuquerque. We haven’t eaten there yet, but Tom, the owner, gave me a cup of Vietnamese iced coffee after we finished the deal (the coffee was wonderful). I’m planning on going there for lunch later this week. Pho 79 got a great review by “Trip Advisor” that called it a “hidden gem.”
Paris Authentic
Does anyone remember Marcel Duchamp’s found art? The urinal he simply signed “R. Mutt 1917” was discussed it my art, art history, photo and photo history classes when I was a geography/photography student some 30 years ago. We finally got to see it in person at the Pompidou Center in Paris in June. Even though this piece was quite popular among the art professors and art students at the university, I didn’t have to hold my camera above crowds of admiring people to get a photo of Duchamp’s porcelain masterpiece, as Laurie pointed out. I could actually touch it as there were no barriers around it, alarms to set off or even a guard in the room.
