This is the upstairs portion of our office after the smoke was cleaned up, the walls painted and the offices reoccupied. The first three photos are the same spaces pictured in the first three photos on my blog As the Smoke Churns from January 7, 2014 that shows the smoke damage from the Flamenco fire at the end of the block on December 18, 2013.
While hot air balloons are a common sight every fall in the Albuquerque area, this balloon flying over the house at sunrise on a very cold February morning was a surprise. Although, with the temperature inversions common to the area, the temperature might have been warmer 200 feet above me where the balloon was than where I was standing photographing it.
We had a light snow most of the day, which left a dusting of snow on top of a hardened layer of thin ice that was not much fun to scrape off the windshield and windows. After 40 minutes on the road, I stopped at the post office in Corrales to pick up the mail, and noticed that the ice and snow stuck on the hood was only a little wind-streaked.
We got our first snow of 2014. Even in color, the snow on the black bamboo makes a B&W photo. My B&W panorama of the Sandias taken through the windshield while driving on Alameda is “not even”, and the last photo is looking west at the volcanos from Lomas and I-25.

What is fresh cement without “Bass Music”? FDC is “Fire Department Connection” — a couple of interesting FDCs downtown.
The weather was sunny, with no wind and a high in the 50’s, so I took my cameras out for a walk around downtown. As I was crossing Central Ave. (Old Route 66) at sixth street, the guy in the blue car with big wheels started honking his horn. When I looked in his direction, he was making a gesture for me to take a photo, so I grabbed a quick shot as the light turned green, just before he drove off up Central. He looked pretty happy that I got the shot. The second photo is a little “abstract reflectionism” on Gold Ave. And then I got a “drive-by” photo of the moonrise over the Sandias as I was turning onto Coors Rd. on my way home.
Even though it’s winter, you still see lots of cool motorcycles on the streets around Albuquerque.
As darkness fell, firefighters continued battling the stubborn blaze. The flashing lights highlighted a purple haze in the smoke that consumed the area.
