  1. Using a splash of color(s) in an otherwise black & white photo makes an interesting composition, drawing attention to certain details. I think the blue and yellow you used work well together.

    • Hi Cathy. When there’s a lot of cement, or monochrome background, I often try the limited color to see how it works. Doesn’t always, but often it makes what I’m used to seeing as ordinary and boring a little more interesting.

  2. Hi Tim, a terrific series with bits of color. My favorite is the first one, I really like how the reflection of the water adds to the abstract nature of the photo, wonderful! ~ Mia

    • Hi Mia. Like I told Cathy, I often try the limited color to see if I can make the more ordinary and boring a bit more interesting. It worked especially well with the irrigation gate.

      • Tim, I think it worked exceptionally well in this photo, and it’s far from ordinary and definitely not boring. I was completely captivated, it took me a while and I really enjoyed studying the photo to determine what was reflection and what wasn’t. The little blue worked really well, also you’ve got the whole checker board fun house mirror thing going on, plus there’s something so striking about brilliant yellow against a black and white/gray scale photo. I think it’s an excellent photo, you’ve got great eye spotting the creative potential with the irrigation gate.

        • Thanks for the wonderful critique, Mia. I also try to keep in mind that things like irrigation gates that I find so common and boring because I see them daily and use them all summer, are not so common outside of this area.

          • You’re welcome, Tim. You’re also right we have nothing like that in these parts, or I’ve never noticed, the closets thing here is the LA River, which is a concrete river bed.

            • I’ve seen various movies that used the LA River. It’s like a large, concreted version of our irrigation and flood control ditches.
