Somebody Set Up Us The Bomb

DSCF8980

The title is another line taken from the 1991 introduction to an adaption of the arcade game “Zero Wing” that had really bad Japanese-to-English translation (It’s also included in the intro to the video All Your Base Are Belong To Us). The crew working on cleaning up the smoke in the office is moving and cleaning everything. They pulled out a computer bag that had been sitting forgotten in a corner for years that had an old Macintosh Powerbook G3 in it. I plugged it in, and turned on the old PowerBook and it still had Mac OS 9.1 on it. Not long after I got it booted it gave me a system error with the bomb. Although nostalgic, I don’t miss the days before OS X and iOS.

Totally Trucked

Since I couldn’t very well fit 12 foot long sheets of corrugated roofing and other building supplies in my Mazda RX-8 (second photo), I used The Home Depot’s rental truck to bring home construction material for my “catio” re-roofing project. The truck is a big Ford Super Duty that only costs $20 for the first 75 minutes.

Cat Three

DSCF8958

I had one of those disgustingly productive days — I removed the roof from the “catio” but left the fencing around it intact. The kitties were supervising, and they thought I was a pretty cool cat working up on the roof, balancing on vigas, hopping between cross beams, and making quite a mess at the same time. They didn’t realize what I was doing until we all came it for the night and found the cat door to the catio blocked. Now my being on the roof all day doing dangerous things is like very un-cool among the cats.

The reason I deroofed the catio is that Laurie started reorganizing everything, and that turns into repurposing spaces. The roof over the catio was originally a shade structure to protect our bonsais and other plants from the intense sun we have in New Mexico. I later put a tin roof on it, but there was really no way to seal the edges against the house to make it useful for anything but plants, weights and cats without redoing the roof. So a roof redo is underway so I can seal the sides that are against the house and make it a more useful space. The last photo is the roofless catio taken through a very dirty window.

The Living and the Dead

OldChurch

“Ghetto scans” of 4X5 photos I took of a couple of churches and a graveyard on New Year’s day. Between the scanning technique, and the paper texture that gets picked up by the scanner (I place a piece of paper on top of negatives to help distribute the light more evenly), “ghetto scanned” 4X5 negatives end up looking like really old photos.

Hot Wheels

The weather was sunny, with no wind and a high in the 50’s, so I took my cameras out for a walk around downtown. As I was crossing Central Ave. (Old Route 66) at sixth street, the guy in the blue car with big wheels started honking his horn. When I looked in his direction, he was making a gesture for me to take a photo, so I grabbed a quick shot as the light turned green, just before he drove off up Central. He looked pretty happy that I got the shot. The second photo is a little “abstract reflectionism” on Gold Ave. And then I got a “drive-by” photo of the moonrise over the Sandias as I was turning onto Coors Rd. on my way home.

Cats in Winter

DSCF8857

What do our cats do in winter? Romeo was not sure about me taking yet another photo of him. Rosencrantz made like a kitty statue, while Guildenstern relaxed on a Viking book to see if he could soak up some Old Norse. Mama Manx dozed on a “cat magnet” blanket, and Diné got warm lying on the heater vent.

Ratatouille Bocadillo and Waffles

DSCF8812

I made a cheese burger bocadillo with ratatouille for dinner last night — it was wonderful. Around 11:00 this morning I took a load of stuff to Goodwill, and then stopped by the store around 12:00 to get a paper shredder. While looking for paper shedders I passed by the waffle makers, and since I was hungry, I ended up coming home with a great big waffle make instead of a paper shredder (I didn’t find the paper shredder I wanted). As you probably guessed, I had waffles for lunch. I made a quick buttermilk batter from our old Betty Crocker cookbook, and used the waffle maker’s suggested amount of batter for the first waffle. That turned out to be a little much as some of the batter ran over the edges of the waffle maker.  The remaining batter wasn’t quite enough for a full-sized waffle.

Of Mice and Mess

DSCF8801

Laurie’s been reorganizing the house over winter break, and she finally got to the armory/computer room/photo room/workshop that has been doubling as a large closet to store everything that we didn’t have a place for otherwise. Scads of age old electronics, analog sound equipment, computers and peripherals have come out of this room — many of which go back to the stone age of their technology.
