Did you wear your Mascherina on May Day? I finally got my latest parody finished. There are no cats or Lego® characters in this one. It’s weird. It’s a little different. It’s ridiculous, and it’s bloody awful. Basically everything a parody should be. I think you might enjoy it.
My inspiration for making a parody of Los del Río’s Macarena using the line “Andare a ballare ballo in a mascherina!” in the chorus came from Siogiovanni’s post Buona domenica ! Sono pronto al ballo in mascherina… The moment I saw the title of his post I thought it would be perfect for a parody of Macarena. I suggested that Siogiavaonni do the parody, but I have to assume that Signor Giovanni has a normal mind, unlike mine that is a bit twisted.
After I suggested the parody, my twisted mind couldn’t let go of it, so I looked up a video of Macarena that has English and Spanish, Los Del Rio – Macarena (Bayside Boys Remix), got the music off of it, and wrote the lyrics with the chorus in Italian:

Writing the lyrics was one thing, singing them was another. I about killed myself trying to sing the chorus. I’m just a slow-talking country boy who grew up playing in the mud along the Rio Grande. Rattling off a chorus in Italian at warp speed was nearly an insurmountable task. However, after practicing all of last weekend, I finally got through it, shy a few brain cells from lack of oxygen, and my mind twisted up a little tighter after many attempts at getting through just two repeats of the chorus, let alone all eleven times the chorus is repeated in the song. I had to do two tracks for the chorus singing with myself, which doubled the effort. It would have been nice to simply duplicate the first successful vocal track, but duplicate tracks are identical and still sounds like one person singing. Søren wanted to help sing, but it was too much for his bird brain, as well. However, he can dance Il Mascherina really well.
I decided that Antonio Romero Monge and Rafael Ruiz Perdigones (Los del Río) are not really from this world as they can sing Macarena effortlessly without breathing. We saw them in concert at Parque de Atracciones de Madrid in Madrid, Spain a couple of years after they released Macarena. They were excellent performers and rattled off “Dale a tu cuerpo alegria Macarena…” effortlessly and as clear as a bell at warp speed. I didn’t think much about it back then. Now I am very impressed with those two after making this parody.
I never liked Macarena very much, therefore, I added a guitar track to the recording to add interest and counterpoint. I played my Black Beauty Strat on the recording. It’s the most recent of my custom guitars that I finished a couple of months ago. The masked guitarist plays Black Beauty in the video.

Thanks, Maj and Sher. This was one that, like many movies, the “making of” is as interesting, maybe more so, than the video. When we lived in Spain they called “Making ofs”, “Making offs”, making off is easier to say.

It’s amazing how some things persist. Back in the 70s when I started playing in bands, one song we had to know to get gigs was Proud Mary. I never liked that song, but we had to learn it and someone always requested it.
Several years ago I was helping an older couple in our bonsai club with repairs around their house. They lived next to a high school. While I was outside working on something, I could hear the school’s marching band practice. I was astonished to hear the band playing the same old crapping marching band songs that I played in marching band 30 years earlier. I was shaking my head asking myself “don’t things ever change?”
Some things never change Timothy. I know what you mean about the marching band. The only school bands I see playing different “stuff” it Texas A * M! Have a lovely day !

Bloody awful? How about bloody fabulous! I wasn’t sure where you were headed with the girls in skimpy clothes, but you got on track. The bobbing owlets are adorable. It was pos-i-lutely wonderful to see the parrots again. This is great campy fun, Tim. The guitar work (and the actual guitar) is beautiful and adds just a bit of a surreal feel to the video. Thanks, Teagan. I’m really happy you think it’s bloody fabulous. It’s bloody silly, which is the intent. I ran into the models when I was in town a few years ago. They were in bikinis doing a charity car wash. As true models, when they saw I had a camera, they went into modeling mode. They were really sweet, beautiful young women. I didn’t have time to wait in line to get my car washed, so I gave a donation to the charity. The models were perfect for the parody. In the original song, Macarena has a boyfriend and while he is being inscripted into the army, she goes off with two of his friends for a threesome. Macarena is a tart.

Fabulous Tim! I don’t know where to start? There is so much fun in this video. Okay… the lyrics rule, ya did great with the chorus, you look fab in the mask, Black Beauty is gorgeous, (how many guitars do you have, all in all?) amazing how you got the owlets to dance along (although mama did not look amused) your peacock came out in full colours, (he’s still there!) Søren can really dance ( are there 2 Sørens, or is there some photography trick?) and in the end, you can dance, you can dance you can really dance!

Our neighbor did not like the peacock and called animal control. Animal control found a place with peacock hens and they came a took the peacock. I could have kept him, but I would have had to build an eclosure to keep him from going over to the neighbor’s property. We figured he’d be happier with the girls.

Well, Macarena was more bad than the “hippie” episode on ST: TOS. The hippie episode, BTW, was replayed on one of the local digital TV channels tonight. At least they had some snappy tunes on the hippie episode. 🙂
Hi David. I don’t know what the hippie episode is. Macarena is snappy and the original lyrics a bit spicy, the song is very repetitive.
The hippie episode is when Captain Kirk and crew come across of a wayward band of “travelers” who reject technology while searching for Eden. The travelers are led by a psychotic, formerly brillant scientist. The dialog is very 1966-ish.

Thanks, JYP. As I noted, it about killed me singing the chorus. I really begin to appreciate and have respect for artists when I parody their songs. Sometimes things I never thought about are so difficult.
We had “parody week” while I was in the karaoke league. Having to sing parody lyrics while the original ones are flashing on the screen is surprisingly hard. Many of us wrote parodies that were deeply inappropriate so lots of laughing or forgetting the lyrics entirely. Not to mention it can be surprisingly challenging to sing beautifully and enunciate clearly. I’m seriously impressed that you pulled off the Italian
I’m seriously impressed I pulled off the Italian, also. I almost gave up because it was so difficult to sing it up to speed. The real killer was once I got through one successful take, I had to do another. I can appreciate any effort people mke to do a parody with the actual words rolling by. It’s hard enough to do the parody with music.
